WHERE'S YOUR PASSION? PDF Print E-mail

Jesus teaches that it’s a very difficult task for the rich to enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 19:23).  Why?

Perhaps it’s in the distractions that these riches can include?  The wealth of this world has a way of warping our motives.  We become fixated upon the creature comforts and lose sight of the creators instructions.

God’s word gives each of us, as followers of Christ, the sacred task of being our brothers keeper.  As James states, it is the royal law . . . “love your neighbor as yourself” (James 2:8).  Seeing the need, the Holy Spirit filled Christian will seek to fill that need – even if it means less for him or herself.

The author of the book entitled “Radical,” David Platt, subtitles his writing “taking back your faith from the American Dream.”  In this book David suggests that we (as western Christians) are failing in fulfilling the great commission – due to the fact that we are more in love with our lifestyles than we are with Jesus.

“If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion – how can God’s love be in that person?”  1 John 3:17 (NLT)

So, where does your passion lie?

For those “in Christ,” the needs of others will move them into action.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS PDF Print E-mail

Proverbs  2:1-8 (ESV):
1. “My son, if you receive My words and treasure up My commandments with you, 2. making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; 3. yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, 4. if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, 5. then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 6. For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; 7. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8. guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of His saints.”

Choices are roads that we travel.  We understand that making a certain choice leads in a particular direction.  Conversely, an opposing decision may point you down a completely opposite path.

How do you know the proper course to take?  Read the above passage very carefully.  Verses one through four give us instructions on how we can draw near to the mind and heart of our Savior.  Verse five gives us the results of this passionate hunt for wisdom,  understanding, and knowledge.

How do you make the correct decisions?  You become a Proverbs 2 follower.  Opening yourself up for God’s divine voice in your life.  Then, as verse eight teaches, He will “watch over” your way.

Listen intently and obey completely.

TRANSFORMING LIGHT PDF Print E-mail

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.  Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”  – MLK.

These words reflect lessons that can only be learned by sitting at the feet of the Master – for they are His words, His truth.

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”  John 1:4-5 (ESV)

When this truth is learned and lived – when it is internalized and accepted as our way of being . . . then this light will be reflected through our love and will begin to diminish darkness.  This has the power to transform the world.

“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.”  –MLK

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN PDF Print E-mail

In 1970 Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, write a song that becomes one of the largest hits of the rock era.  The song?  “Stairway to Heaven” performed by Led Zeppelin.  (And everyone around my age is humming along right now!)

This song begins and ends with the interesting line . . . “And she’s buying the stair way to heaven.”  Not sure what Page’s or Plants’ idea of heaven was?  The possibility of purchasing their version may be doable?  Not so with eternity!

But did you know that there is an actual stairway to heaven?
“Then he said, ‘I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.’”  John 1:51 (NLT)

We often visualize a large beautiful staircase heading into glory-that's not even close.  The stairway is a person . . . rather God as a person – Jesus Christ the Son of Man.  He is the ladder in Jacob’s vision, He is the only tower that can reach to heaven, He is the ark in which we find Glory.

If you want to use the phrase “heaven on earth” then yeah, I’m sure you can buy it.  But if you want an eternal home in glory . . . then all paths lead to Jesus.  He is Truth, yes.  He is Life – forever and full.  But above all, He is the only staircase that leads to the Father!

Jesus is my Rock!  How about you?

AN EPIPHANY PDF Print E-mail

At the end of December Ann and I rolled into Little Rock – late – and were sitting in an all night diner eating breakfast for supper. All around us at the surrounding tables there was a low hum of conversation. At first it bugged me because the low hum had a way of building louder and louder before it would settle back down. Not one to pay attention to other's conversations – I realized that here I couldn’t if I wanted to – as English or at least the English I recognized was scarce in the building.

Somewhere during the meal I had an epiphany. Is this how the world hears the church? Has our church-speak become so pronounced that the world has difficulty understanding what we’re trying to communicate?

Jesus had an incredible way of connecting with people right where they lived – helping His hearers to actually grasp the great love of the Father.

May we go and do likewise!
