HOLY DAYS PDF Print

What is a Holy day of obligation?

To the Roman Catholic it is a day that one is required to attend mass – which is every Sunday.  It is as their catechism states, necessary.  There are other Holy Days, throughout the year to be sure, but this teaching stresses the need for the believer to be involved in regular worship.

I’m curious as to what something like this would mean to your average run-of-the-mill Baptist?  Being obligated seems to grate on the nerve that birthed our ilk out of the separatist movement to begin with.  Here’s the first verse that came to mind when I began to wrap my thoughts around this question.

“. . . not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”  Hebrews 10:25  ESV

I see the words, “neglecting” and “obligation” as contrasting . . . at least in this context.  Many of today’s believers have turned neglecting into an art form – developing a system where by they reinterpret Holy Script as mere suggestions – good suggestions, but suggestions nevertheless.  How does this develop?

It comes with a distorted view of God.  We perhaps see Him as our personal Protector who is at our beckon call – rather than a Holy and Righteous Creator who has every right to make any demand upon our lives at any time He so desires.

In considering the idea of obligation, I’m confronted with just how often we may deem God to be obligated toward us without returning the love.  Here's a thought . . . May we stop and consider just how often our neglect collides head on with God’s word – exposing a hesitancy to surrender our complete selves to Christ!  May this epiphany lead to a renewed spiritual hunger turning obligation into opportunity?

Trust and obey!
