“For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in His steps.  He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in His mouth.  When He was reviled, He did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but continued entrusting Himself to Him who judges justly.   He himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.  By His wounds you have been healed.”  1 Peter 2:21-24 ESV

Before Peter brings his readers to the crescendo of his apologetics passage in what we call chapter three, he proceeds this teaching with a reminder that as we faithfully walk with Jesus we will also experience suffering in this temporary, present, existence.  He actually brackets this instruction with the idea of suffering – reminding us that this is not a sign of disobedience – but to the contrary, a sign of deep faithfulness.

“For to this you have been called . . .”  To what?  Suffering for His cause, His message.  Peters' world, and our own, resists "The Jesus Way" violently at the behest of their lord – the devil.  The apostles experienced this first hand, as have so many Christians that followed in their footsteps. 
The questions arises today, for us . . .

  • Are we following His (Jesus) example?
  • Are we walking in His steps?
  • Are we willing to surrender all?


“. . . but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”  1 Peter 3:15 ESV
